Pound-the-Bounds 2008 Best Year Yet!

This was the eighth Rock Parish boundary walking event and despite the terrible weather 301 people turned out to walk. As in previous years, it brought together a large number of local, and not quite so local. This year we had visitors from Shrewsbury and Hertfordshire! Whilst like-minded in their interest in the out-door aspects and enjoyment of the country-side at its best, participants obviously differ very much in other ways, going by their choice of distances and ambitions of speed. From the keen long-distance ones, queuing up outside “the Cross” at 07:30, to the 6 mile strollers, registering as late as 3 pm, they all added to the fun.

A total of 301 walkers registered (in 2006: 288, in 2007: 205), spread as follows:

                                   25 mile: 46                            last year 38

                                    18 mile: 4                              last years 2,

                                    15 mile: 35                            last year 19,

                                    10 mile: 50                            last year 47,

                                     6 mile independent:81        last year 57,

                                     6 mile guided:18                  last year 8,

3 mile Treasure Hunt: 67     last year 34.

This adds up to a total of 3042 miles; last year 2233 miles; roughly equivalent to the distance from John O’Groats to Lands End three and a half times.

Alan Humphries lead the 18 people who chose to go a guided walk. On return the mood was very jolly and the group praised Alan in particular when he took them all to Heightington village hall for the facilities just as the heavens opened and they took shelter until it passed. The walkers said they where very impressed with Alan’s foresight!

The pub did excellent business from 8 a.m. to midnight and it became an enjoyable fun day for all, never mind a few blisters! Lynn Morris had again made a beautiful Pound-the-Bounds cake, the first  prize for the raffle, which was won by visitor from Pershore. Lynn also kindly provided the second prize a voucher for £40 towards a celebration cake which was won by Ruth who came from Kidderminster.

Going by the general feed-back, the event was a positive experience for most participants. Sincere thanks must go to all those who put in their time organising and helping to run the event on the day, to all participants walking the miles, to the commercial sponsors, to the walker-sponsors, to James and Mat and their team at The Cross and to all land-owners for coping with the large number of people crossing their property. The confirmed resulting net income from the event so far is £3446.69 (£1.32 per mile walked).
