Pound-the-Bounds 2009It Just Gets Better & Better! This was the ninth Rock Parish boundary walking event. The weather was kind and 329 people turned out to walk. As in previous years, it brought together a large number of local, and not quite so local. This year we became International with visitors from New Zealand and the Netherlands! Whilst like-minded in their interest in the out-door aspects and enjoyment of the country-side at its best, participants obviously differ very much in other ways, going by their choice of distances and ambitions of speed. From the keen long-distance ones, queuing up outside “the Cross” at 07:30, to the 6 mile strollers, registering as late as 3pm, they all added to the fun
A total of 329 walkers registered (in 2006: 288, in 2007: 205, in 2008: 301), spread as follows: 25 mile: 40 last year 46 18 mile: 39 last year 39 12 mile: 86 last year 50 6 mile independent: 82 last year 81 6 mile guided: 36 last year 18 3 mile Treasure Hunt: 46 last year 67
This adds up to a total of 3580 miles; last year 3042 miles; roughly equivalent to the distance from Rock to Yekaterinburg in Siberia.
Alan Humphries lead the 36 people who chose to go a guided walk. On return the mood was very jolly and the group praised Alan in particular when he took them all to Heightington Village hall for the facilities and refreshments on the patio allowing time to rest and to take in the breathtaking view. We thank the Heightington Village Hall committee for allowing us to use the hall for the day.
The pub did excellent business from 8 a.m. to midnight and it became an enjoyable fun day for all, never mind a few blisters! Lynn Morris had again made a beautiful Pound-the-Bounds cake, the first prize for the raffle, which was won by our landlord James Winterbottom. Lynn also kindly provided the second prize a voucher for £40 towards a celebration cake which was won by Sheila Hopkins friend.
Going by the general feed-back, the event was a positive experience for most participants. Sincere thanks must go to all those who put in their time organising and helping to run the event on the day, to all participants walking the miles, to the commercial sponsors, to the walker-sponsors, to James and Mat and their team at The Rock Cross and to all land-owners for coping with the large number of people crossing their property. The confirmed resulting net income from the event so far is £2739.02 (£0.77 per mile walked).
